cart – diffusion-based cartograms
The R package cart can be used to produce density-equalising maps or so-called "cartograms" based on the diffusion-based method by Michael T. Gastner and Mark E. J. Newman. The package makes use of an implementation in C by Mark E. J. Newman.
The following figure shows a map of the U.S. and a cartogram of population estimates for the year 2009 similar to the one here.
